Vũ Ngọc Phan
Vũ Ngọc Phan (Hanoi, 8 September 1902 – 1987) was a Vietnamese writer and literary critic. His wife was the poet Hằng Phương and their daughter the painter Vũ Giáng Hương.〔Cao Đài Lê, Lady Borton - The central highlands: a North Vietnamese journal of life on the ... - 2004 Page 13 "Her father is Vu Ngoc Phan, a well known writer; her mother is the poet Hang Phuong."〕
He studied French literature in Hanoi, then in France. In his literary criticism he preferred writers from the end of the 19th Century to the Second World War. His criticism was published in five volumes up to 1942.〔Văn Ký Nguyen ''La société Vietnamienne face à la modernité'' 1995 Page 120 "Si Nguyën Công Hoan se dirigea vers le réalisme social, Vu Ngoc Phan préféra la critique littéraire. Ses oeuvres consacrées aux écrivains depuis la fin du XIXe siècle jusqu'au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, publiées en cinq volumes à partir de 1942 témoignent de son ardeur. Originaire d'une grande famille de lettrés, il fit ses premières études dans une école franco- indigène, puis plus tard au Collège du protectorat d'où il sortit vers 1926 avec le Brevet. Tout en travaillant il pousuivit ses études jusqu'au Baccalauréat qui lui permit d'entrer en contact avec le milieu journalistique. Marié à 24 ans, le jour de Noël 1926, date qu'il avait choisie lui-même, avec la première fille dont il était tombé.."〕
